چکیده

rugae), rat (8) and golden hamster (7). We showed that palatal growth rate, spacing and addition rate in mouse/rat were remarkably similar (with respect to the embryo size difference), and that increase to 9 rugae in mouse is achieved by postponing the end of the addition process (hypermorphosis). Such a heterochronic shift may be typical of 1 variations observed among muroid rodents. In contrast, decrease to 7 rugae in golden hamster is attributed to early growth termination (progenesis) of the palate, which correlates with the severe shortening of gestation in this species. Our results provide an experimental support to the intuitive view that terminal heterochronies are especially relevant to meristic evolution of traits that rely on a sequential addition process.

a massive sequencing approach of a cDNA library, the whole set of Hox genes of the chondrichthyan, Scyliorhinus canicula. We have sequenced seven BAC clones that include all of the HoxA, HoxB and HoxD clusters. The transcriptomic data suggests that no HoxC genes have been maintained in this species. The expression of the posterior Hox genes was studied by insitu hybridization and showed that al...

Revisiting the origin of the vertebrate Hox14 by including its relict sarcopterygian members.

Bilaterian Hox genes play pivotal roles in the specification of positional identities along the anteroposterior axis. Particularly in vertebrates, their regulation is tightly coordinated by tandem arrays of genes [paralogy groups (PGs)] in four gene clusters (HoxA-D). Traditionally, the uninterrupted Hox cluster (Hox1-14) of the invertebrate chordate amphioxus was regarded as an archetype of th...

Noncanonical role of Hox14 revealed by its expression patterns in lamprey and shark.

Hox genes are arranged in uninterrupted clusters in vertebrate genomes, and the nested patterns of their expression define spatial identities in multiple embryonic tissues. The ancestral Hox cluster of vertebrates has long been thought to consist of, maximally, 13 Hox genes. However, recently, Hox14 genes were discovered in three chordate lineages, the coelacanth, cartilaginous fishes, and amph...
